World Changers Church Macon partnered with the Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities to host its first Senior Farmer’s Market, August 31, 2017

The Senior Farmer’s Market is associated with the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) that awards grants to States, United States Territories, and federally-recognized Indian tribal governments to provide low-income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for eligible foods (fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs) at farmers' markets.

The purposes of the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program are to:

  1. Provide resources in the form of fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey and herbs from farmers' markets to low-income seniors.
  2. Increase the domestic consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding or aiding in the expansion of domestic farmers' markets.
  3. Develop or aid in the development of new and additional farmers' markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.

Low-income seniors, generally defined as individuals who are at least 60 years old and who have household incomes of not more than 185% of the federal poverty income are the targeted recipients of SFMNP benefits. The SFMNP is currently funded by Farm Bill (Public Law 113-79). The federal regulations that govern the administration of this program can be found in Title 7 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 249 (Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program).

World Changers Church Macon was excited to serve 112 seniors under the voucher program! Individuals and volunteers serving the seniors were also able to purchase produce, bringing our total served to 120.
